Officers from the East Fishkill Police Department were dispatched to a Roundhill Road residence in Hopewell Junction at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night, where there was a report of a motor vehicle theft from the home.

Responding officers launched an investigation, which led to East Fishkill Police Officer Sean Phillips tracking down the stolen vehicle, with a suspect inside, near the intersection of Route 82 and Trinka Lane. When Phillips attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver - later identified as Poughkeepsie resident Christopher Fidelman, 24 - took off in the stolen car “at an extremely high rate of speed.”

Police said that Fidelman fled the scene onto Route 376 and then onto Railroad Avenue, striking a parked car and intentionally ramming the police cruiser Phillips was operating. Fidelman then drove the stolen vehicle down the red bed ballast, over a small bridge and ditched the car, fleeing on a bicycle.

Phillips - who was not injured when his cruiser was struck - eventually tracked down Fidelman with an assist from members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and police canine units.

Fidelman was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, attempted assault, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. He was also cited for multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

Following arraignment, Fidelman was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. He is due to appear in East Fishkill Justice Court at a later date to answer the charges.
